State leaders call US’ exclusion of some countries from Americas summit ‘inexcusable’; Chinese FM urges US to stop bullying

Some state leaders have criticized the US over excluding Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua from the Summit of the Americas, calling it “inexcusable” and “incomprehensible” that some countries were not present. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Friday that the US should stop bullying, coercion, blockade and sanctions.

Media have reported that Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Belize John Briceno and other Latin American and Caribbean leaders questioned US’ exclusion of some countries during their speeches at the ninth Summit of the Americas.

Zhao said he also noticed that Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said the summit is a neocolonial show serving American domestic affairs. 

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that instead of remaining silent in the face of hegemony, the Americas must enter a new phase in which the exclusion policy is abandoned, Zhao said at a press briefing on Friday. 

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that the time when the US used Latin America as its backyard to issue orders is over and the US should not turn a deaf ear to the legitimate concerns and voices of most countries in the region, Zhao said.

The US should discard the outdated Monroe Doctrine and hegemonism as soon as possible and develop relations with other countries in the region on the basis of mutual respect, equality and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, according to Zhao.
