Nebenzia: Western sanctions against Russia are leading to a crisis of historic proportions

United Nations, 29 March. /TASS/. The unilateral sanctions imposed by the West against Russia are leading to a global economic crisis of historic proportions. This was stated on Tuesday at a meeting of the UN Security Council by the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the world organization Vasily Nebenzya, speaking about the food crisis threatening the world.

“The real reasons that threaten the world food market with serious turbulence are by no means in the actions of Russia, but in the unbridled sanctions hysteria that the West has unleashed against Russia without thinking either about the population of the states of the so-called global south, or about its own citizens. An attempt to isolate Russia Economically, financially and logistically, from established long-term cooperation channels, it is already turning into an economic crisis of historic proportions Even to an inexperienced observer it is clear that only the rejection of unilateral illegal restrictive measures can relieve the tension of transport, logistics, financial ties, ensure uninterrupted supply and stabilize international agricultural and food markets “, – he said.

Russia’s international obligations

Russia strictly observes its international obligations, so that there will be no threat to those Ukrainian military who prefer to lay down their arms, Nebenzya said.

“The Russian side strictly observes its international obligations, and nothing threatens the Ukrainians who laid down their arms,” he said.

The diplomat recalled that the draft resolution, which the Russian side put to a vote last week, set out the demand for “respectful and humane treatment of prisoners of war.” This was done taking into account “videos posted by Ukrainian Nazis on the Internet with extremely cruel treatment of captured Russian soldiers,” Nebenzya said, asking the other participants in the meeting if they had seen these footage.

On Monday, video footage appeared on the Internet, in which, presumably, Ukrainian radicals are torturing Russian servicemen they hold. According to the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, those who participated in the torture of prisoners must answer for their deeds. On Tuesday, the head of the Russian delegation at the talks with Ukraine, presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, said that the Ukrainian side had promised to take the toughest measures against criminals who abused Russian servicemen.

Humanitarian pauses

The West is showing inconsistency and hypocrisy in demanding humanitarian pauses in Ukraine, Nebenzya said.

The diplomat stressed that at the meeting of the Security Council there were “many calls for a humanitarian truce, provision of humanitarian access, gumpauses and humanitarian corridors.” “Yesterday, [UN Secretary-General António] Guterres came up with relevant initiatives,” Nebenzya said.

“Colleagues, it’s hard not to be amazed at your inconsistency,” the Russian envoy continued. He recalled that “last Wednesday, the majority [of the Security Council members] rejected the Russian draft humanitarian resolution, binding on all parties, with a specific list of steps” to be taken to resolve the humanitarian crisis “primarily in eastern Ukraine.” “In this regard, today’s statements, especially by Western delegations, sound very hypocritical,” Nebenzya stressed.

Purge of social activists

Russia is concerned about reports that the Kiev authorities are carrying out a physical cleansing of opposition politicians, journalists and public figures, Nebenzya said.

“In the context of such brutal treatment of Ukrainian citizens by Ukrainian radicals and special services, we have serious concerns about the physical cleansing of bad opinion leaders carried out by the Kiev regime,” he said.

Nebenzya noted that this includes the kidnapping of civil activist Elena Berezhnaya, as well as similar reports of the disappearance of opposition politician Vasily Volgin, political scientist Dmitry Dzhangirov, political scientist Yuri Dudkin, journalists Dmitry Skvortsov and Yuri Tkachev, and searches at the home of political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky.

Participation of the UN vehicle in hostilities

Russia demands explanations in connection with the use of a UN car with diplomatic plates in the fighting near Kharkov, Nebenzya said.

“We cannot but express our concern over the ongoing cases of seizure of vehicles with UN symbols by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is good that the UN Secretariat has finally acknowledged the relevant violation in Kharkiv and Mariupol,” Nebenzya said. “We are awaiting a response to our latest request for a UN vehicle with the diplomatic number “DP210015” also in Kharkiv, who, according to eyewitnesses, participated in the military operations of Ukrainian nationalists.

“We are aware of cases where the radicals used OSCE vehicles. Our colleagues in Vienna are fully aware of this information,” the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation noted. “It is important that both international organizations give a fair assessment of such facts.”

Western weaponry

Russia admits that Western weapons can be imported to Ukraine through cars with medical symbols, Nebenzya said.

“From publications on the Internet it is clear that the vehicles of the DHL delivery company used to transport weapons have also ended up in the hands of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We cannot exclude that under the cover of vehicles of these organizations [UN and OSCE] or vehicles with medical symbols to Ukraine from neighboring States can import the very weapons that the West so generously promised Kiev,” Nebenzia noted.
