Trump New York quarantine would be ‘federal declaration of war’: NY gov. Cuomo

New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo has warned of “a federal declaration of war,” dismissing possible plans by US President Donald Trump to impose a regional quarantine to limit the spread of the coronavirus in the country’s epicenter, as the number of fatal cases surpassed 2,000 nationwide.

“If the president was considering this, he would have called me; This would be a federal declaration of war on states,” Cuomo said on Saturday evening during a CNN interview, hours after Trump mentioned the idea of locking down parts of the northeastern states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut in efforts to slow the coronavirus spread.

‘Chaos and mayhem… anti-American, anti-social’

“It’s a preposterous idea, frankly,” he added. “It would be chaos and mayhem. If we start walling off areas all across the country it would just be totally bizarre, counterproductive, anti-American, anti-social.”

The New York governor went on to underline: “This is a civil war kind of discussion. I don’t believe that he could be serious, that any federal administration could be serious about physical lockdowns of states or parts of states. I don’t believe it’s legal, I believe it would be economic chaos, I don’t believe the American people would stand for it.

Announcing his possible decision to impose the quarantine in the New York area earlier on Saturday, Trump told reporter: “They’re having problems down in Florida. A lot of New Yorkers are going down. We don’t want that.”

Nearly 120,000 Covid-19 cases in US

According to experts at Johns Hopkins University, by Saturday night more than 116,000 Covid-19 cases had been recorded across the United States — the highest figure in the world — with New York being the heaviest hit state by far.

Cuomo further added: “It’s totally opposite with what the president would want to do, work with the states, get the economy running and get some sense of stability. You wouldn’t at this point literally fracture the entire nation because it’s not just New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, it’s Louisiana and New Orleans. The numbers will continue to rise and every few days it’s going to be another hotspot.”

“Why you would want to just create total pandemonium on top of a pandemic I have no idea,” he then emphasized.

Since the virus first appeared in the US in late January, Trump has wavered between playing down the risks of infection and calling on Americans to take steps to slow its spread.

The American president has also been reluctant to invoke emergency powers to order US companies to produce much-needed medical supplies, despite the pleas of governors and hospital workers.

Trump also appeared to soften his previous remarks insisting on the US economy to be reopened by mid-April. “We’ll see what happens,” he said.

It was not clear whether Trump would be able to block road, air and sea travel out of a region that serves as the economic engine of the eastern United States, accounting for 10 percent of the population and 12 percent of GDP.

The development came as some US states have already imposed limits to contain the pandemic. New Yorkers arriving in Florida and Rhode Island face orders to self-isolate if they intend to stay, and the governors of Pennsylvania and West Virginia have asked visiting New Yorkers to voluntarily self-quarantine.
