Trump speaks with forked tongue on China: Scholar

US President Donald Trump praises China’s efforts to stem the recent coronavirus outbreak while he has launched a campaign of fear and panic against the country, says Professor Dennis Etler, an American political analyst who has a decades-long interest in international affairs.

On Monday, China’s Foreign Ministry said Washington is setting a “very bad example” when it comes to tackling the viral pandemic, saying the Trump administration is spreading “unceasingly manufactured…panic” over coronavirus instead of providing much-needed assistance.

Trump on Friday thanked China for its “efforts and transparency” in tackling the deadly virus that has triggered killed at least 361 people so far.

“China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus,” Trump tweeted.

“The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency,” he added. “It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!”

However, last week, Trump signed an order barring entry to foreign nationals who had traveled to China within the past two weeks.

The World Health Organization has advised against imposing such measures, warning that travel restrictions can cause more harm than good.

China: US spreading fear over coronavirus outbreak instead of offering aid

China: US spreading fear over coronavirus outbreak instead of offering aidWashington has “unceasingly manufactured and spread panic” over the outbreak.

Etler, a former professor of Anthropology at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California, told Press TV on Monday that “Trump speaks with forked tongue, assuring China on one hand that the US supports its efforts in containing the coronavirus outbreak, while stabbing her in the back with the other, once again illustrating US perfidy.”

“The US has a long history of broken treaties with its native peoples. Its habit of saying one thing and doing the opposite led to the phrase ‘speaking with forked tongue’ that native people applied to the untrustworthiness of what the leaders of the nascent nation said. Ever since, the US has pursued a policy of lies and deceit in its dealings with foreign countries,” the analyst said.

“The latest example is its dealings with China. After China dealt in good faith in trade negotiations with the US last summer, Washington pulled the rug from underneath them and reneged on the nearly completed deal, postponing the final agreement until it suited Trump’s political ambitions, all in the hope of damaging China’s economy, to no avail,” he said.

“Now, Trump speaks with honey-coated words saying how much he appreciates China’s efforts to stem a viral pandemic, all the while launching a campaign of fear and panic against her,” he noted.

“This, as history shows, is to be expected,” Etler concluded.
