Jihadists suffer heavy losses in 2 ambushes carried out by suspected Russian troops

Over the last week, the jihadist rebels have suffered heavy casualties in two separate incidents along the front-lines in the demilitarized zone.

These two attacks have been carried out behind the jihadist lines, with one ambush taking place just north of the Hama Governorate and the other in the Al-Ghaab Plain region.

The ambushes have been precise and incredibly costly for the militant forces, as they were unable to fend off or kill any of the attackers.

Both ambushes have been a mystery, but a source from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in Hama believes the attacks have been carried out by Russian Special Forces.

The first attack, which targeted a group of Suqour Al-Sham fighters north of the demilitarized zone in southern Idlib, was carried out at night and resulted in the death of 14 militants.

Following the ambush, the source told Al-Masdar News that the Syrian Army was not behind the attack, despite some claims from pro-government activists.

Nearly five days later, another ambush was carried out in similar fashion, with the attackers striking a group of foreign jihadists from the Hurras Al-Deen group at the militant-held town of Khirbat Al-Naqous.

While the second attack was not as deadly as the first, it was rather surprising given the large presence of jihadists along the front-lines in the Al-Ghaab Plain.

In fact, since the ambush was carried out, the Hurras Al-Deen group and their jihadist allies have been heavily targeting the nearby town of Joureen, which is a government stronghold in the Al-Ghaab Plain.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has denied that their ground troops are participating in the Syrian Arab Army’s offensive in northwestern Syria.

However, these attacks seem to have little to do with the government’s offensive as one of the ambushes against the Al-Qaeda-linked group was conducted during the conditional ceasefire.

If the Russian Special Forces are really behind these attacks, it is likely that they are acting on information received from local spies and military intelligence.

It is not clear if these ambushes will continue and without any group or government claiming responsibility for these attacks, we may not know who was behind this.
