Keith Preston, chief editor of AttacktheSystem.com. said Turkey was gradually moving away from the traditional American paradigm and heading in a different   direction leading towards Russia.

Preston told Press TV that tensions between Turkey and the United States especially rose when Donald Trump became the US president.

Preston said since the Trump administration came to power, there is clearly some tension between the United States and other traditional US allies in NATO.

He said a number of issues were the reason for the tensions.

One reason noted by Preston for the increased tensions with Washington is Ankara’s decision to purchase a Russian missile defense system.

“Turkey and the United States are now having a conflict over the question of Turkey’s acquisition of weapons from Russia,” Preston said.

Another sticking point between Washington and Ankara is the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Washington has been supporting the terrorist group while Ankara sees the group as a threat, according to Preston.

He noted that Germany was one of those countries that the Trump administration has tensions with. “There is tension between the US and Germany.”

Germany has in the past called on its European neighbors to create a united European front against the NATO and the Trump administration.

The Trump administration’s increased pressure on its traditional allies to spend more in NATO and give the US better trade conditions has caused relations with these countries to deteriorate.

Trump’s withdrawal of the Paris Climate Accord, as well as his pullout from the EU-backed Iran nuclear deal, were other reasons for bitterness between the US and its traditional allies.
