‘Fast-moving’ winter storm expected to wreak havoc on the East Coast on Sunday with snowfall of up to eight inches expected in New York state

Heavy snowfall is expected in the East Coast area on Sunday through Monday morning as a winter storm sweeps in from the West. Snow began to fall in the Tri-State area Saturday.

  • A winter storm approaching from the West brought snowfall to the Tri-State area on Saturday 
  • In the East, winter storm watches were issued from the Appalachians to Maine, including Boston, Providence, parts of New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore metro areas
  • The most powerful storm system is expected on Sunday afternoon through Monday, bringing significant snow
  • Weather advisories were issued in other parts of the mid-west including Denver, Oklahoma,and Kansas City 

Snow that fell overnight blanketed much of the Tri-State area on Saturday – with ‘significant’ snowfall levels expected on Sunday – as a winter storm sweeps in from the West.

The latest winter storm has been moving in from the West and will spread its expansive swath of snow across the Plains, Ohio Valley and Northeast this weekend.

New York City, suburbs north and west of the city and most of Long Island reported three to five inches on Saturday morning. Areas further north and west including the Hudson Valley and the Catskills also saw snowfall.

Some towns began declaring snow emergencies, ordering cars off the roads as snowplow vehicles removed large build-ups in certain areas.

The National Weather Service advised that the storm will move northeastward out over the Atlantic, with ‘heavy snow possible from the Central Appalachian mountains to New England.’

In it a forecast it said: ‘The system will produce snow over parts of the Northern Mid-Atlantic into Southern New England and rain along the Northern Mid-Atlantic Coast ending by Saturday evening.

‘Upper-level energy over the Great Lakes will move eastward off the New England Coast overnight Saturday. The energy will produce light snow over the Great Lakes that will move into the Lower Great Lakes by Saturday evening.’

It also issued winter weather advisories in other parts of the Great Basin and Plains, from South Dakota to Arkansas and southern Illinois, including Denver, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and St. Louis……more here
