An Alabama man has been arrested on charges of trying to blow up his mother using a propane tank in a booby-trapped storage shed.

Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen, of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, said a woman called police on Wednesday saying she was worried her son, 45-year-old roger Johnson, was both on drugs and storing propane in a shed.

The woman also said she was concerned her son was refusing to leave the shed and she did not know what he was doing with a propane tank in there.

An officer responded to the family’s home off of County Road 527 in Woodville, where he was told by Johnson not to go inside the shed behind the house.

His mother, however, gave the deputy permission to enter the structure, at which point a small blast went off.

According to Harnen, Johnson had build an explosive device using PVC pipe and gunpowder, WHNT reported.

Luckily for the deputy and the suspect’s mother, the propane tank was not turned on at the time and no one was injured.

Johnson was booked into the Jackson County Jail just before 6pm on two counts of first-degree attempted assault and one count of possession of a destructive device.

Authorities said the 45-year-old man was apparently angry with his mother, but his exact motive remains unknown.

Authorities say the assault charges against Johnson could be upgraded to attempted murder at a later time.
