US Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo on Tuesday rejected speculations that President Donald Trump was abandoning Americas allies. Yet he came up with a new strategy that could mark a paradigm shift in Washingtons foreign policy agenda.
He told EU diplomats that Trump was trying to create a new liberal order that prevents war and achieves greater prosperity for all. When it comes to wars, the US has waged more wars than any other country in the world, the 17-year war in Afghanistan one example.
Its engagement in Yemen and Syria are two other examples that have brought death and destruction to those countries. But many believe the bombastic presidents understanding of the world order is a realist one in which mistrust in others and insecurity are two primary facts about the world outside.
