Severe storms batter the Northeast leaving Amtrak service between Boston and New Haven, Connecticut, SUSPENDED, schools closed and hundreds of thousands without power

  • Dozens of schools across the Northeast have announced that they will be closed or have delayed opening times today after storms battered the region
  • Strong winds brought down power lines leaving the Amtrak service between Boston and New Haven in Connecticut suspended
  • Around 300,000 people across the region have also been left without power 
  • Flights into La Guardia Airport, in New York, have two hour delays due to the powerful winds  
  • Parts of Rhode Island reported wind gusts of up to 81 mph last night
  • In Newark, New Jersey, on Sunday, a motorist had to climb out of his car window to escape rapidly rising floodwaters 
  • Severe weather warnings for strong winds and flash flooding have since been issued along the Northeast 
  • Storm is expected to continue moving north to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont

Dozen of schools are closed today, Amtrak services are suspended and 300,000 have been left without power after severe weather pounded the Northeast early Monday.

Strong winds and heavy rainfall brought down power lines across the region, causing travel chaos.

The Amtrak service between Boston and New Haven in Connecticut suspended after the storm and flights into La Guardia Airport, in New York, are running with two hour delays due to the powerful winds, according to FlightAware.

Meanwhile, many schools across New England, New York and Virginia are closed or have delayed opening times today.

Severe weather warnings for strong winds and flash flooding have since been issued along the Northeast.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo activated the New York State Emergency Operations Center Sunday.

‘At my direction, the Emergency Operations Center is activated and personnel are at the ready to help New Yorkers impacted by these adverse weather conditions,’ he said in a statement.

‘I urge everyone to take caution, avoid driving, and remain indoors if possible.’…..more here
