A teenager’s alleged rapist was “counseled” by her church pastor for months after she reported she was being sexually abused by the police officer, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

Juan Ruiz-Carrillo, 47, who was a five-year veteran with the San Antonio Police Department, was arrested on Monday night on felony charges, the Express-News reports. He has been suspended pending the outcome of his case.
The alleged abuse went on for four years on a weekly basis, starting when the victim was 15 years old. Ruiz-Carrillo threatened the girl that he would commit suicide if she reported it.

“There is no one in this police department that is pleased by this or happy about this. It is an embarrassment to the department,” Chief William McManus told reporters. “Officers take great pride in their jobs, and no one wants to see an officer who’s been convicted or who’s been involved in something like this remain on the department.”

KENS5 reports that the girl reported the abuse to the “head pastor” of her church last year, who then “counseled” Ruiz-Carrillo for four months before telling her parents and advising her to report the crimes.

The station reports the girl had told her pastor the abuse had stopped but then made an “outcry” on Sunday that she was being abused.
