The United States is moving to “fill the void” in Syria as the Russian air campaign has weakened the militant groups fighting to overthrow the government there, says an American geopolitical analyst.

US military officials have stated that special forces are being deployed into Syria to “capitalize on the gains” made against the Daesh terrorist group on the ground, Eric Draitser said in an interview Sunday.

“But if you break down the statements, what that says is that whatever gains have been made, the US is now moving quickly to fill in the void,” he said. “What are those gains? Well much of that, if not the majority of it, is due to the Russian bombing campaign.”

“The United States is moving quickly to capitalize on the gains made by Russia, to outflank Russia and the Syrian Arab Army in these fights for the purposes of being able to establish itself as the dominant force on the ground,” the analyst noted.
The new plan in Syria would be separate from a revised US military effort under way to train militants there, officials said.

The additional US forces in Syria will establish sites where they would train militants and eventually provide them with weapons.

“This is a way for the United States to be able to tilt the balance on the battlefield in its favor after having seen Russia along with its allies really come out as a dominant player in this entire equation,” Draitser said.

“The United States is not really stepping up the fight against ISIS (Daesh), it is stepping up the fight against Russia… this is an attempt to outmaneuver the Kremlin when it comes to the battlefield in Syria,” he explained.
Syria has been gripped by a foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives and millions have been displaced as a result of the violence.
