Apparently at one elementary school in Chicago, stealing candy is an offense punishable by handcuffing small children. Six-year-old Madisyn Moore was reportedly placed in cuffs and put under the stairs at the Fernwood Elementary School in Chicago, after taking candy from her teacher’s desk. Her mother, Marlena Wordlaw, expressed her outrage to NBC News Chicago.

“I said ‘Why you have my baby in cuffs?’ He said, ‘Because I’m trying to teach them to stop taking stuff that don’t belong to them,’” Wordlaw recalled. “When he pulled her from under stairs she was crying,” Wordlaw said. “He told me ‘I’m doing my job, I’m trying to teach her a lesson.’”

Madisyn also recalled the pain of the handcuffs.

“They hurted,” Madisyn said. “He snatched me out of my class. He made me get out in my handcuffs.”

The Chicago public school department has not made a statement regarding Madisyn’s incident. Though Woodlaw says the school’s principal apologized, she still plans to file a lawsuit against Fernwood.

“I’m more angry than anything, because it’s my only daughter,” she said. “I feel like anything could have happened to her. Somebody could have touched her. She’s in the dark under the stairs.”
