The recent US naval operation in the South China Sea near China’s artificial islands is an attempt by the Obama administration to “intentionally provoke a military confrontation” with Beijing, Billington told Press TV on Tuesday.

The Chinese are trying to “defend themselves against this mad threat of war being carried out by Obama on a global scale,” he added. “This provocation in Asia has to be recognized as grounds for impeachment of this president.”

Washington’s provocation in the South China Sea is in line with its military buildup in Syria and Eastern Europe to oust the government in Damascus and threaten Russia with military confrontation, Billington noted.

On Tuesday, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter told his Chinese counterpart Chang Wanquan that the US military would continue to operate in the South China Sea.

“(Carter) once again reaffirmed that the United States will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows,” a senior US defense official said after the two military chiefs met in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In similar remarks on Tuesday, the head of the US Pacific Command said in Beijing that the United States will continue to patrol the waters surrounding China’s man-made islands in the disputed waterway.

China insists it has sovereignty over nearly all of the South China Sea. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also have overlapping claims.

The US does not recognize China’s sovereignty in the disputed waters and has sent surveillance aircraft and warships to monitor Chinese activities.

Washington accuses Beijing of conducting a massive “land reclamation” program in the disputed waters, whereby it has built up rocks and reefs into artificial islands with facilities for potential military use.

However, Beijing accuses Washington of meddling in the regional disputes and deliberately stirring up tensions in the region.
