The Obama administration has been “caught off guard” by Russia’s successful military campaign against terrorist groups like Daesh (ISIL) in Syria, a US military analyst based in California says.

“Russia has been enormously successful, has been absolutely brilliant in its tactical and strategic alliances with Syria and Iran,” said Scott Bennett, a former US Army psychological warfare officer.

By contrast, Washington has “engaged in reckless bloodshed, foolish waste of time and we’ve financed the enemy that we claimed to the United States and European peoples to have been fighting,” Bennett told Press TV on Saturday.

“Russia and Iran and Syria have redefined themselves as a force of stability in the Middle East, whereas the United States under the Obama administration and the blind and deafened fools in Congress have defined themselves as the terrorist financing elements,” he added.

Bennett said US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s recent warning to Russia for launching airstrikes against terrorists in Syria is an acknowledgement of the US military’s incompetence in the Middle East.

During a NATO defense ministers meeting in Brussels on Thursday, Carter said Russia will soon start paying the price for its military intervention in Syria in the form of reprisal attacks and casualties.

Carter accused Moscow of being reckless in its military commitment, risking clashes with US aircraft in Syria.

On September 30, Russia launched an air campaign against foreign-sponsored terrorists wreaking havoc in Syria. Russian warships also began to launch missiles into Syria from the Caspian Sea on Wednesday, deepening US anger at Moscow.

Syria has been gripped by a foreign-backed militancy since March 2011 aimed at toppling the Assad government. The violence has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people so far.
