A second winter storm in less than a week has swept through the northeastern United States, leaving four people dead, reports say.

The storm on Monday walloped cities from New York City to Boston with snow, freezing rain and gusty winds. Chicago received more than a foot (30 cm) of snow.

Cynthia Levine, 57, was struck by a snow plow in the Boston suburb of Weymouth and was killed. Also, a hall worker died at the University of Connecticut after he spent overnight storm duty in a dormitory dining room.

In addition, two other people were killed on Monday in a highway accident caused by hazardous road conditions in Indiana, police said.

The blizzard-like conditions also caused Boston to delay its Super Bowl victory parade and in New York City a crowded subway train stalled on an elevated stretch to track.

Snow also caused the cancellation of nearly 2,900 flights at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport and New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

The National Weather Service forecast that Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island and northern Connecticut will get as much as a foot of fresh snow.

The previous storm left about two feet (60 cm) in Boston, which is predicted to get another foot, setting a record for the snowiest seven-day period in the city’s history.

The massive blizzard slammed the Northeast of the United States and affected about 20 percent of the US population.

The historic storm caused several states in the east coast to declare emergencies, closed major mass transit hubs and schools.
