A group of ten former McDonald’s workers have sued the company for racial discrimination and sexual harassment after they were fired from their jobs in Virginia.

The lawsuit that was filed Thursday alleges that some employees were fired from one franchise in the southern state of Virginia because there were “too many black people”.

The plaintiffs, seven of whom were women, said they were “subjected to rampant racial and sexual harassment, committed by the restaurants’ highest-ranking supervisors,” according to the civil rights.

Some of the plaintiffs complained that they were fired because a company called Soweva that operated the restaurants wanted to “reduce the number of African-American employees and hire more white employees,” according to the lawsuit.

“Soweva’s supervisors were blunt, telling employees that it was ‘too dark’ in the restaurants, and that they were going to hire different workers because they ‘need to get the ghetto out of the store,'” the complaint read.

They said that supervisors repeatedly complained “there are too many black people in the store,” the lawsuit alleges. They said when they tried to contact McDonald’s corporate office, there was no response.

The fast food giant issued a statement, saying, “McDonald’s has a long-standing history of embracing the diversity of employees, independent franchisees, customers and suppliers, and discrimination is completely inconsistent with our values.”

Last year, the company hired a large number of white employees and fired several of the African-American employees.
