The Pentagon is developing insect-like drones with the capability of flying at high speeds throughout tight spaces, a report says.

According to Fox News, the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been studying insects and birds like the goshawk in a bid to develop ‘autonomous’ drones for “disaster relief operations.”

The agency said on its website that the government group seeks to develop an algorithm that allows a drone to act on its own to dart through “complex, cluttered environments” without a human handler.

Earlier last week, DARPA said the group “tasked with using technology, robotics, science and biology to make sure our enemies don’t have a leg up on us,” it said.

“Through this exploration, the program aims to develop and demonstrate the capability for small (i.e., able to fit through windows) autonomous UAVs to fly at speeds up to 20 m/s (meter per second) with no communication to the operator and without GPS waypoints,” wrote the website.

The drones will travel at a range of over 3,000 feet and run for about 10 minutes during missions, it said. They would also be useful for situations in natural disaster, which would involve locating survivors in trapped buildings.
