Revelers around the country are set to shiver as they welcome in 2015 as an unusually cold Arctic blast causes temperatures to plummet nationwide.
In California up to 180 frustrated motorists were snowed in on a San Bernardino mountain pass near to Los Angeles and will wake this morning in a church shelter waiting to be rescued.
And from usually balmy Las Vegas to more cold weather-seasoned Times Square in New York, frigid winds will cause the thermometer to drop 25 to 45 degrees below average – with weather experts warning party-goers to wrap up warm.

Stranded and rescued: Almost 200 motorists across the San Bernardino Mountains became stuck in heavy snow falls and needed to be taken off the roads by snowcats
Most of the stranded drivers in California became stuck near the town of Crestline after a car crash in front of them blocked the road and caused the snow to build up on the road.
Pictures posted to social media by the hapless drivers show scenes of carnage as cars slid off the icy road and all-terrain snowcats arriving to ferry motorists to a nearby church in Baldy Village.
In Texas, the state Capital Austin announced that it was canceling its New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Anticipating near-freezing conditions, the city has told revelers to stay at home and said that even the public firework display will not go-ahead.
‘This decision was made for the safety and comfort of the entire Austin community. Austin’s New Year is designed to be a family-friendly celebration featuring the best of Austin arts, music, food and culture,’ said William Manno, the city’s Corporate Special Manager.
On Tuesday, temperatures dipped double digits below zero in at least 12 states from Idaho to Wisconsin with the coldest parts of the country unsurprisingly near the Wyoming-Montana border at 35 below zero.
