Ziprasidone can cause a potentially fatal skin reaction, FDA says.

A type of antipsychotic drug, Geodon (Ziprasidone), can cause a potentially fatal skin reaction, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US has warned.

The drug, produced by American multinational pharmaceutical corporation, Pfizer, has been reported to cause life-threatening skin condition known as drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS).

Many complaints have been reported around the world by people who were under ziprasidone treatment.

“Ziprasidone is an antipsychotic drug currently being used to decrease delusions, mania, hallucinations and other psychotic symptoms in bipolar disorders and schizophrenia,” FDA said.

While there is no treatment for DRESS, patients who reveal the suspected symptoms should stop taking the drug, FDA advised.
