New official figures show that half of those without a job in the European Union now fall into the category of long-term unemployed. The number of people out of work in the bloc has increased for the second month in a row and stands at 24-point-4 million.
The social crisis in the European Union has never been worse. 1 in 4 children in the bloc are now living in poverty. Long-term unemployment is also fuelling homelessness and health problems.
Doubt has been cast over whether the EU can generate a fund of €315bn announced this week to promote jobs and investment over the next three years. Even if the money is raised, campaigners question whether it will be enough. Figures just published by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, show that 24.4 million people in the bloc were unemployed in October, 42,000 more than in the previous month.

18.4 million people are unemployed in the eurozone. 5 million people under 25-years-old are without a job in the EU. Unemployment has increased in the bloc for the second month in a row. 12 million people in the EU are now classified as long-term unemployed, which makes dealing with the problem even more difficult.

There is growing skepticism among EU citizens that political leaders can solve the bloc’s unemployment crisis. It was reflected in European Parliament election results last May which saw the mainstream parties lose dozens of seats and since then public protests have been taking place right across the European Union as frustration grows and people continue to vent their anger.
