Many groups rally in Australian city where G20 leaders meet

Protests continue throughout the Australian port city of Brisbane, where leaders from the world’s strongest economies have gathered to promote various causes, Press TV reports.

On Saturday, thousands of people staged peaceful protests outside the G20 summit venue in Brisbane to bring attention to their causes despite a heavy police presence and security lockdown in city.

The demonstrations included members of the Aboriginal communities as well as twenty other groups, all seeking to make their voices heard by the world leaders, including US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron, who have come to Brisbane.

The protesters also intended to say that they are opposed to capitalism, and are concerned about environmental issues and the rights of Aborigines.

“They say warfare, we say welfare,” shouted some of the protesters, while others carried banners against poverty and inequality.

Boosting world growth, fireproofing the global banking system and preventing tax dodging are among the major issues to be discussed during the two-day G20 summit in Brisbane. World leaders are expected to elaborate on plans devised by G20 finance ministers back in February to advance global growth by 2 percent within the next five years.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on the participants to also address the challenges posed by the deadly Ebola virus, climate change and the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
