By sending the Changzheng 2, a Type 091 Han-class nuclear-powered submarine to Sri Lanka and the Persian Gulf last month, the People’s Liberation Army Navy of China is demonstrating its force projection capability to the United States according to the Moscow-based Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

Currently China is believed by Western observers to have a total of 71 submarines in service or in development, including obsolete conventional-powered submarines and advanced nuclear-powered submarines which are able to launch anti-ship missiles. Among them, the most powerful submarines are China’s three Type 094 Jin-class ballistic missile submarines, which are all able to fire JL-2 second-generation intercontinental-range ballistic missiles with a range of 8,000 kilometers.

Even though the Type 094 submarines have not yet entered service, they still spell trouble for the United States because the JL-2 can reach North America. China is also interested in purchasing Russian-built submarines to replace its older conventional-powered submarine fleet. The Russian newspaper reported that China has already signed a framework agreement with Russia regarding the purchase of Lada-class submarines.

The United States Navy has deployed six P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft to Okinawa in Japan, to monitor China’s submarine movements in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in the South and East China seas.
