A new research carried out at University of Texas has demonstrated that high-fat foods have more harmful results for male than female.

Animal study shows that eating high fat foods causes greater inflammation in the brains of male mice.

Researchers also found that the brains of females protected by oestrogen, according to research published in Cell Reports.

The team observed male and female mice divided into two groups fed by normal diet and a group with high fat diet, containing 42 percent fat,

The high fat diet was also high in carbohydrates making it a good correlate of human junk food.

“The high fat food was tasty like eating a burger and a coke,” said the study leader Dr Deborah Clegg at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre, Dallas.

After 16 weeks on the fatty food, the male mice showed markers of inflammation in their brains while there was no inflammation symptom in the female mice’s hypothalamuses.

“We found there was more palmitic acid and that ceramide levels were higher in the male brain. And linoleic acid was absolutely missing in the male brain but was elevated in the female brain,” explained Deborah.

The team is now working on the research in broad scale to find whether the findings applicable to people too.

If the findings have the same results in human, there will be some very immediate practical implications for men and women’s diet, researchers say.
