Greetings,

Syrian army gains another town near Damascus

Black smoke and destruction welcomed us as we reached Adra al-Balad town northeast of the Syrian capital Damascus right after it was secured. The Syrian army in cooperation with national defense forces regained full control of Adra al-Balad and Adra al-Jadida. They killed a large number of foreign-backed militants who had been fortified in the town for nearly two years.

Militants burned the apartments they used as fortifications before escaping. This was a police department they had established. Those are vehicles the militants used to transport water and fuel between militant-held towns. The army discovered what can only be described as the largest trench militants dug in Damascus. They used it for secret and safe transportation between Adra al-Balad and Adra al-Omaliah to prevent possible army gunfire.

In May 2013, extremists desecrated and exhumed the grave of Hujr Bin Adi, a close companion of Islam’s prophet Mohamad, peace be upon him. We entered the secured mausoleum to document the destruction caused at the hands of the extremists. By securing Adra al-Balad town, the Syrian army has advanced further towards Duma, which is just 10 kilometers southeast of Adra al-Balad.

There is where is some of the most well trained extremists of Jaish al-Islam are positioned almost since the beginning of the unrest. The strategic location of Adra al-Balad town north of Eastern al-Ghouta will pave the way for the Syrian army to strike other militant strongholds deep in Eastern al-Ghouta.

The victory also enhances the security of the international highway between Damascus and northern Syria. Several days ago, the army also secured the nearby town of Adra al-Omalia as well as industrial factories located on the outskirts of the town. These are the latest in the army’s gains against the insurgents near Damascus in the past months.
