Prediabetes may increase certain cancers risk

Greetings,

Pre-diabetes may increase certain cancers risk

Large study has revealed that Prediabetes could increase the risk of several types of cancer by 15 percent.

A meta-analysis comprising 16 studies and almost 900,000 participants from different regions of the world also indicates that the risk measure depends on the type of cancer.

The results were consistent across cancer endpoint, age, duration of follow-up and ethnicity, according to the study report published in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.

Prediabetes is a general term that refers to an intermediate stage between normoglycaemia and overt diabetes mellitus. It means the amount of glucose in the blood is higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes.

It includes individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or a combination of the two.

Researchers also found that there was no significant difference for the risk of cancer with different definitions of prediabetes (IGT or IFG).

Study unraveled that prediabetes was significantly associated with increased risks of cancer of the stomach, liver, pancreas, breast and endometrium, but not linked to the cancers such as lung, prostate, ovary, kidney or bladder.

An earlier study unraveled that “Fasting had the potential to become an important diabetes intervention.”

While the fat cells are major contributor to insulin resistance, which can lead to diabetes, fasting through eliminating and breaking down fat cells can minimize insulin resistance and consequently combat diabetes risk factors in prediabetic people.

“The recent findings have important clinical and public health implications,” researchers say.
