Ebola spreading ‘exponentially’ in Liberia: WHO
The Ebola virus is spreading “exponentially” in Liberia, where thousands of new cases are expected in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned.
“The number of new cases is moving far faster than the capacity to manage them in Ebola-specific treatment centers,” the WHO said in a statement issued on Monday.
“Transmission of the Ebola virus in Liberia is already intense and the number of new cases is increasing exponentially.”
The WHO added that international efforts must be scaled up three-to-four times in the West African country, as well as other regional nations to contain the disease.
“Many thousands of new cases are expected in Liberia over the coming three weeks,” the health agency noted.
According to the latest WHO data, the total number of deaths from Ebola in the worst-hit areas including Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone has topped 2,100.
Meanwhile, the African Union has planned to lift travel bans on the affected regions to ease the economic pressure caused by the outbreak. AU leaders are in favor of a coordinated African response to the epidemic.
Ebola is a form of hemorrhagic fever whose symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding.
The virus spreads through direct contact with infected blood, feces or sweat. It can also be spread through sexual contact or the unprotected handling of contaminated corpses.
Ebola was first discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976 in an outbreak that killed 280 people.
It remains one of the world’s most virulent diseases, which kills between 25 to 90 percent of those who fall sick.
