The second test launch of the PLA WU-14 hypersonic weapon on Aug. 7 is just the beginning of a new arms race with the US, reports the New Delhi-based Economic Times.

The United States launched a test of its own Advanced Hypersonic Weapon on Aug. 25 following the test of China’s WU-17. Both tests failed, but the race continues to an operable hypersonic weapon that would be able to hit its target with more speed than any previously existing weapon. The missile would be able to to travel five times faster than the speed of sound and cover a range of several thousand miles, said the report.

Hypersonic weapons are not a new type of weapon, according to James Acton, a senior associate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and writer on the blog Arms Control Wonk. “Ballistic missiles are hypersonic weapons,” he added. What makes the new hypersonic weapons which China and the United States are now testing different is that they belong to a different class of hypersonic weaponry called “boost-glide weapons.”

Bender said that boost-glide weapons are launched by big rockets just like ballistic missiles. Rather then arcing higher than the atmosphere, boost-glide weapons are put on a trajectory to re-enter the atmosphere as quickly as possible. After that, they simply glide to the targets. Boost-glide projectiles travel quickly and at a flat angle, working at speeds and trajectories that flummox existing missile defense technologies, said the report.

Lora Saalman, a specialist on China with the Carnegie Endowment, said that what the United States worries about is that the PLA may use the WU-14 to launch the first nuclear strike against North America. The United States successfully tested its first Advanced Hypersonic Weapon back in 2011. It travels 2,300 miles in less than half an hour. As for China, the first test of WU-14 proved to be a success as well this January. In addition to China and US, Russia and India are testing hypersonic weapons as well.
