About 400 firefighters in the Northern California town of Weaverville are struggling to contain the blaze which was sparked Sunday afternoon near the main road into town, The Associated Press reports.

fa4“The flames laid pretty low last night and they were able to make some good progress,” CalFire spokeswoman Cris Hartman said early Monday, adding that the fire was 25 percent contained.

The fire still is threatening about 500 additional residences, some 20 businesses and facilities, including the town airport and high school, said Lilly Wyatt, a spokeswoman with the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.

The highway was temporarily closed and school was canceled for Monday as the fire burned more than 1 square mile overnight.

Fire officials said daylight will deteriorate the situation as gusty winds and dry conditions return.

Weaverville is on the National Register of Historic Places.
