British Conservative MP, Andrew Mitchell, has called for an arms embargo on Israel over the Gaza war, saying a huge number of innocent people were caught up in the offensive.

Mitchell, who was also UK’s former international development secretary, made the remarks during a radio interview on Wednesday after he was asked whether he supported such a ban.

In addition, Mitchell warned that the level of misery and bloodshed in the Gaza Strip was likely to poison the remaining goodwill in the region for several generations.

“There is no doubt that an enormous number of innocent people have been caught up in this action, and of course this will have effects not just … [on] this generation but down the generations,” Mitchell noted.
Furthermore, Mitchell blasted Israeli forces’ recent deadly airstrikes on UN-run schools in Gaza, as the schools sheltered thousands of residents.

A recent official report revealed that Israel received around £8 billion in the form of 400 arms licenses from the UK in 2013.

This is while Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza agreed on Tuesday to a temporary ceasefire amid an Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave, which was launched on July 8. The Israeli war has killed at least 1785 people, including some 400 children.
