Russia may speed up siding with the East after the Crimea crisis and it is inevitable that neighboring China and Russia will forge closer ties, reports the military magazine of Canada-based news organization Kanwa Information Center.

The report said the stalemate among Russia, Europe and the United States may last for a long time, so China-Russia’s military cooperation may also enter a new era.

A Russian newspaper reported on March 29 that Russian president Vladimir Putin had agreed to the arms sales of the S-400 Triumf to China. It is unusual for a major media outlet to link Putin’s name with S-400 sales to China and is being interpreted as Russia sending a strong political message to the West and Japan.

Russia is negotiating sales of the S-400 with China and if the deal is closed, China will be the first foreign country to use the Russia-developed new generation anti-aircraft weapon system, said a Russian official. If negotations go well, the China will likely obtain the S-400 by 2016.

Sales of advanced military equipment, such as the S-400 and Sukhoi Su-35, basically need the consent of Putin, as well as other key agencies in the government.

Some are of the view that China does not need to rush military cooperation with Russia because of the rapid development of its own military technology. However, the newspaper predicted that China-Russia military cooperation will deepen due to two major reasons.

China still needs to depend on Russia for a series of key technical equipment, such as engines. Additionally, many Russia-made weapon systems purchased by China during the late 1990s need an upgrade. Before the Crimea crisis, there were voices in Russia that strongly opposed the idea of selling advanced military technical equipment to China.

A Russian expert in the military industry revealed that someone in Kremlin wants to please Beijing through the arms sales.
