Soldiers of the Syrian army have managed to retake parts of a gas field captured by Takfiri militants earlier, a monitoring group says.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Syrian government’s troops launched a counter-attack against the militants on Saturday and recaptured large areas of the Shaar field.

“They are advancing in Shaar and have managed to regain large parts of it, while trying to control surrounding areas,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, the director of the Britain-based group.

He added that the Syrian forces are launching airstrike as clashes are taking place on the ground.

The army also managed to kill around 40 Takfiri militants during the counter-attack.

The Takfiri terrorists killed “270 people,” by raiding the field on Thursday, the monitoring group said at the time.

Fueled by Western-backed militants, violence has gripped Syria for more than three years, leaving over 160,000 people dead and millions displaced.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
