Russia is considering targeted retaliatory strikes against Ukraine after shells fired from inside Ukraine hit Russian territory, killing a civilian, media say.

The Russian daily Kommersant on Monday quoted a source close to the Kremlin as saying that Moscow is mulling the possibility of targeted strikes against Ukraine.

The source, whose name was not mentioned, said “our patience is not limitless,” adding that Russia “knows exactly where they (the Ukrainians) are firing from.”

According to the source, Russia is considering targeted one-off strikes on positions from which shells are fired at Russian territory.

Artillery shells from Ukraine hit the Russian region of Rostov on Sunday, killing a 46-year-old man and seriously injuring two others. The fatal incident prompted Moscow to warn Kiev of “irreversible consequences, for which Ukraine will bear responsibility.”

The Kiev government denies that any Ukrainian shells had fallen on Russian territory, blaming it on the pro-Russian forces in the area.

The Russian Rostov region has recently seen over a dozen shells hitting the area, which borders Ukraine’s eastern Lugansk region, where Ukrainian troops are fighting pro-Russian forces.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking parts in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since mid-April.

Violence intensified in May after Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Lugansk held local referendums, in which their residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine.

Hundreds of people have been killed in the ongoing military campaign in Ukraine, which has also forced tens of thousands to escape to Russia, with the majority arriving to the Russian Rostov region.
