Three people died and 25 were injured during the forceful operation held in Mariupol in eastern Ukraine on May 9. Nevertheless, the United States continue backing acting Kiev government despite the fact that it is using force against civilians, calling it an ‘anti-terrorist operation’.

Meanwhile, speaking in Poland, the NATO Secretary General described Kiev’s reprisal raid against the peaceful population of Mariupol in eastern Ukraine as ‘the right and duty of every state to protect its territory and people.’ Stephen Lendman, an author, who has recently come out with a book shaping up the Ukrainian situation, commented on the situation.

You wrote a book about Ukraine. What prompted you do it, and what’s your general position on the current events in the country?
The book will be out in a few weeks.

It is a book that I and other contributors put together a very important content. It is called Flashpoint in Ukraine: How the US Drive for Hegemony Risks World War III. The contributors are very-very special extraordinary people, some of them world figures and major topics are discussed in the book, there is very little overlap.
Anybody reading this book when it comes out, will absolutely understand what is going on in Ukraine. It is polar-opposite of the way the Western media report things. They report what I call big lies. This book lays out the truth in great detail. It is absolutely must reading and I hope it will be widely received and read by many-many people.
Can you drop some names of who were some of those contributors?
I’ll name them all, I don’t want to leave anybody out. Rick Rozoff (the editor of the stop NATO website), James Petras, John McMurtry, Michel Chossoudovsky, political economist Jack Rasmus, Project Censored/Media Freedom Foundation heads Mickey Huff and Peter Phillips, Pr. Robert Abele, Pr. Jeffrey Sommers, the former Congressman Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney, Michael Parenti, economist Michael Hudson, Edward Herman and David Peterson, Andrew Kolin, Matthew Witt, John Kozy, Mahdi Nazemroaya, Rodney Shakespeare and myself.
Is there a consensus as far as when the whole trend toward what we finally see happening in Ukraine, when did that start and when were the seeds planted for what is going on right now?
It began long before the crisis erupted last November. The Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland admitted on tape that Washington spent over $5 billion arranging the ouster of the legitimate Ukrainian Government and the installation of these putschists. They have no legitimacy. They are waging war on their own people. We know what happened yesterday in Mariupol. We know what’s happened elsewhere.
Imagine a nation sending tanks and armored vehicles, and helicopter gunships and artillery, and other happy weapons, and chemical weapons, and using them against innocent civilians in eastern Ukrainian cities. And they call them terrorists, they call them separatists. And they are ordinary people, just like you and me, and people listening to this program. They are people who want their basic rights respected. I call them freedom fighters, the Ukraine’s best and bravest and, indeed, they are.
Washington bears full responsibility for everything going on in Ukraine. These things just don’t erupt out of thin air, it takes months to plan this, many-many months. And the people in Maidan last year and early this year, they committed the violence and clear evidence shows they were responsible, not the Yanukovych Government.
And what the point of America doing this? Why would America want a fascist regime on the border between Russia and Europe?
I think the plan was set way back, before the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. The American official policy is to co-opt all the former Soviet republics and Warsaw Pact countries with the exception, of course, of Russia as of now. But America wants Russia co-opted as well. It wants to incorporate them all into the pro-Western orbit, wants them all as NATO members.
Ukraine is the crown jewel of all of these countries, a large country the size of France in the heart of Europe sharing a roughly 1500 km border with Russia. And I repeat, what America wants is literally to have the US-NATO bases in Ukraine, on Russia’s borders with long-range multiple warhead nuclear missiles targeting Russia’s heartland. It wants Russia threatened into submission to become another US vassal state.
It nearly got it with the Orange Revolution. And the Ukrainians threw out the Yushchenko Government, reelected Yanukovych who was deposed in 2004 and now he is deposed again. The Ukrainians are right back in the same fix again. What happened in February I call Orange Revolution 2.0, that’s the title of one of my chapters in the Flashpoint Ukraine book.
What can you say about the situation that we currently have in Ukraine? We are on the verge of the civil war. Certainly, that is not something that the US would probably want. I mean, that is not doing them any good, is it?
I think what America really craves is a lot of violence and instability, but not letting it spin out of control. The situation in eastern Ukraine is really spinning out of control and the worst thing for Washington is not so much to have these things going on, but to have them making world headlines on a daily basis.
And what Washington worries about is that if it does come out, it defeats its imperial policy, it makes the Government it supports in Kiev look like the bad guy, it makes the people in eastern Ukraine look like the good guys and they are doing everything possible to prevent that. I think the situation is spinning out of control and Obama’s latest imperial trophy may absolutely slip out of his hands.
