US policy in Ukraine ‘very dangerous’: Expert

The US government’s policies in Eastern Europe including a new push to send weapons to Ukraine over the escalating crisis in that region “would be a very dangerous development,” a geopolitical analyst in Washington says.

If the US gets involved militarily in Ukraine, it would be a “very dangerous situation,” William Jones, the Washington bureau chief for Executive Intelligence Review told Press TV on Wednesday. “It seems as if the US will limit itself at the present moment to sanctions, but there was much discussion also there about sending arms to the Ukrainians which would be a very dangerous development if it were to occur.”

The US accuses Russia of violating Ukraine’s sovereignty by stirring up pro-Russia protests in eastern Ukraine. Russia denies the accusation.

US Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday warned Russian President Vladimir Putin over the current situation in Ukraine, saying, “NATO territory is inviolable.”

“Putin’s Russia is playing by a different set of rules,” Kerry said during a speech at the Atlantic Council’s tribute to NATO and the European Union.

On Wednesday, a group of high-ranking Republican senators introduced legislation aimed at imposing new sanctions on Moscow.

Tensions between the West and Russia heightened after Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and became part of Russia following a referendum on March 16, in which almost 97 percent of the participants voted for rejoining the Russian Federation.

Both the US and the EU have already imposed travel bans and financial sanctions against Russia and a number of Ukrainian officials since the reunification of Crimea with Moscow.
