    US trying to contain China in Philippines

Michael Burns, a military and political analyst in New York, says the United States is using the recent Philippine storms as a pretext to deploy troops into the South Asian country in order to restrain China’s influence.

The US had already been planning to return to the Philippines, years after it left its huge and long-standing bases in the country, Burns told Press TV on Saturday, adding that it has now “a great opportunity,” that is, a deadly typhoon there.

Experts believe that the US government is trying to exploit its disaster response to the typhoon in order to justify more American troops to be stationed at US bases in the Philippines.

They say the US military is interested in increasing military presence in the country to contain China.   “When China started to grow very rapidly,” US policy makers asked themselves, “How do we get back” in the southeastern region, Burns said. “The US wants to get its base back.”

“We [the US] are just trying to jigger the politics to donations and money and geo-political moves and tactics to get another present in the Philippine Island because it overlooks China and overlooks the South China Sea in an enormously powerful staging area,” he added.

John Glaser, a journalist and an editor with antiwar.com, wrote in his latest article that the only reason the US is interested in increasing military presence in the Philippines “is to threaten and thus contain China. Never mind the fact that China doesn’t actually pose a threat to Americans.”
