Scientists from a Chinese university have conducted a study on stem cells, found in human urine, to grow rudimentary teeth from this least likely of all sources.

According to the BBC, a study published in the Cell Regeneration Journal confirms that a tooth-like structure containing dental pulp, dentin, enamel space and enamel organ was produced by a research team at the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health.

The scientists used urine as the starting point, harvesting cells that are normally passed from the body, such as those from the lining of the body’s waterworks, and coaxing them into becoming stem cells. This type of cells can be grown into virtually all kinds of organs.

A mix of these cells and other material from a mouse was implanted into the animals that finally produced a structure that resembled a tooth.

Although the urine-stemming tooth was not as hard as a natural one, the researchers hope this discovery will help them find a way to replace teeth lost with age and poor dental hygiene.
