Reducing salt intake will cut stomach cancers: WCRF

Stomach cancer is difficult to treat successfully because most cases are not caught until the disease is well-established. This places even greater emphasis on making lifestyle choices to prevent the disease occurring in the first place – such as cutting down on salt intake and eating more fruit and vegetables.”

The UK-based World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) says reducing salt intake to recommended levels will decrease the risk of developing stomach cancer.

The British charity called on people not to eat salty food like bacon, bread and breakfast cereals, as too much salt will cause cancer by damaging the stomach lining.

An estimated 14 percent of stomach cancers in Britain, one in seven cases, could be avoided if people consume the recommended amount of 6 grams each day, the WCRF said.

The charity also said that people in the UK consume 8.6 grams a day, 43 percent higher than the recommended levels.

“Stomach cancer is difficult to treat successfully because most cases are not caught until the disease is well-established,” said Kate Mendoza, head of health information at WCRF.

“This places even greater emphasis on making lifestyle choices to prevent the disease occurring in the first place – such as cutting down on salt intake and eating more fruit and vegetables,” she added.

The WCRF then called for a standardized form of “traffic light” food labeling on the front of food and drink packaging in order to help people monitor their consumption of salt.

“Standardized labeling among retailers and manufacturers – rather than the different voluntary systems currently in place – would help consumers make better informed and healthy choices,” Mendoza also said.
