Eurozone crisis may kill euro and trigger Great Depression – IMF
The eurozone debt crisis could lead to the break-up of the single currency if a country decides to step down from the fiscal union, says the IMF’s chief economist Olivier Blanchard. This is the first time the global financial watchdog has accepted the possibility of the break-up of the euro amid mounting fears around the chances of debt default by Spain and Greece.
The IMF also said that this year the eurozone might fall back into recession with a risk of collapsing into a new slump, which could rival the Great Depression. “A break-up of the euro area could not be ruled out. This could cause major political shocks that could aggravate economic stress to levels well above those after the Lehman collapse,” Blanchard said on Tuesday in the IMF’s flagship World Economic Outlook report.
