NASA fires 5 rockets quickly to study high-altitude jet stream

 The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched five suborbital sounding rockets in just over five minutes on Tuesday morning, as part of a study of the high-altitude jet stream.

The rockets lighted up the U.S. East Coast while blasting off within a span of five minutes and 20 seconds from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

 

While the rockets’ trajectories are different, they’ll all release their tracer — a chemical called trimethyl aluminum — roughly simultaneously.

 

The milky, white tracer clouds that formed after the release of the tracer should be visible for up to 20 minutes, researchers said.

 

Three different cameras, one at Wallops and one each in North Carolina and New Jersey, tracked the tracer clouds, measuring how quickly they move away from each other. This information should give scientists a better idea of what’s driving the hyper-fast winds.

 

The 4-million-U.S.-dollar Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment mission aims to probe the high-altitude jet stream, which whistles along 60 to 65 miles (96 to 106 km) above the Earth’s surface. This river of air blows much higher up than the jet stream commonly referred to in weather forecasts, which is found at an altitude of just six miles (9.6 km) or so. And it’s much stronger, too, with winds routinely exceeding 200 mph (320 kph) and occasionally topping 300 mph (480 kph).

 

“The reason for doing this mission is that we really don’t understand why there are such large winds at those heights,” Miguel Larsen, the mission’s principal investigator, told Xinhua.

 

“The high-velocity flow affects how heat energy and the chemical constituents in that part of the atmosphere are transported globally,” said Larsen, who is also a Clemson University professor. “The study therefore adds to our basic understanding of how the upper atmosphere behaves.”

 

The region with the high-speed winds is also part of the ionosphere, where there are strong electrical currents from solar radiation. Data gathered from the experiment should allow scientists to better model the electromagnetic regions of space that can damage satellites and affect radio communications. Scientists also hope the experiment will help explain how atmospheric disturbances in one part of the globe can be transported to other parts of the globe in a day or two.

 

The small sounding rockets being used for the mission are two Terrier-Improved Malemutes, two Terrier-Improved Orions and one Terrier-Oriole. Two of the rockets also carried instruments that measure temperature and atmospheric pressure. All will fall harmlessly into the Atlantic after they release the trimethyl aluminum. The chemical poses no threat to the environment or human health, researchers said.

 

Sounding rocket, sometimes called research rocket, is an instrument-carrying rocket designed to take measurements and perform scientific experiments during its suborbital flight. The rockets are used to carry instruments from 50 to 1,500 km above the surface of the Earth, the altitude generally between weather balloons and satellites. They are advantageous for some research due to their low cost, short lead time and their ability to conduct research in areas inaccessible to either balloons or satellites.

 

The launch occurred at night under clear skies, to make sure the cameras have a clear view of the glowing tracer clouds. That means many skywatchers along the East Coast will get a good look, too.

 

“The trails can be seen from the ground within a radius of 300 to 350 km, depending on how clear the local horizon is and how clear the skies are,” Larsen said.

 

According to researchers, the possible viewing area covers major cities like Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. NASA plans to post pictures and video taken by bystanders on its social media sites.
