Ukraine has transferred all of its weapons-grade uranium to Russia, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.“Ukraine once again confirmed its long-standing commitment to nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation of weapons and made a practical contribution to the further strengthening of the nonproliferation regime established by the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said Ukraine has transferred the uranium to a safe location in Russia.

Ukraine agreed with the United States in April 2010 to dispose of about 90 kilograms of highly enriched uranium by 2012.

Under agreements with the U.S., Ukraine received an equivalent amount of low-enriched uranium and related equipment, while Washington provided financial assistance to Kiev for modern neutron source construction, the ministry said.

Ukraine had the third-largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in the world before its independence. In 1991, Ukraine inherited about 5,000 nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union. In 1994, Ukraine signed the so-called “Budapest Memorandum”, which recorded the abandonment of uranium in exchange for a guarantee of recognition of the country’s sovereignty.
