China’s first demonstration test of an underground shelter proved to be successful, when 80 people emerged from a shelter in Shanxi province on Sunday after a 48-hour stay, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday.

The underground shelter can prevent poisonous and harmful gases from endangering the lives of miners when disasters happen and a full escape is not possible.

With construction having begun in May, 2010, the shelter can provide 80 to 100 people with oxygen, electricity, food, water and communications with the outside world.

Jin Longzhe, a professor at the University of Science and Technology in Beijing, which also sponsored the endeavor, told the reporter that the demonstration proved the reliability and feasibility of the program and that they would make further adjustments based on the results.

Lv Haijun, a miner who participated in the test, said he was tired when he walked out of the shelter but had been relatively comfortable inside, except for some slight wetness.

Liu Rensheng, vice president of Lu’an Group, explained that the shelter provides communication equipment to miners to make sure that they can get in touch with their headquarters through video conversation.

“I will make the greatest efforts to assure miners’ safety,” Liu said.

This program was developed by Lu’an Group, University of Science and Technology Beijing and Beijing Zhongshengzhou Mining Technology Center, and will be introduced to other mines in the future
