Navy preparing for long haul in Haiti
MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) – The U.S. Navy is preparing to help the earthquake relief effort in Haiti for an extended period given the devastation and likely long-term recovery, its top uniformed officer said on Saturday.
“We’re prepared to stay for however long it takes” in Haiti, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead told reporters, as the Navy sped ships and equipment to the impoverished country crippled by Tuesday’s powerful quake.
“The devastation … is absolutely extraordinary,” said Roughead, noting that significant reconstruction could also keep the Navy engaged in the country where Haitian officials say the death toll could reach 200,000.
Roughead, who helped organize the U.S. response to the 2004 tsunami while he was commander of the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, spoke to reporters en route to Mobile, Alabama, for the commissioning of the Independence, the Navy’s newest warship.
He said he was pleased with the speed of the Navy’s response so far, noting that hospital ship the USS Comfort — the military’s largest medical ship — left the Port of Baltimore for Haiti on Saturday and an amphibious readiness group had deployed in half its normal time.
The main elements of the U.S. relief effort began to arrive in Haiti on Friday, with the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson off the coast and beginning to helicopter in water and other urgently-needed supplies.
Roughead said about 10,000 Navy personnel were working on the Haiti crisis, and of that about 5,000 sailors were already on site.
The USS Bataan, an amphibious ship carrying 2,200 Marines, is slated to arrive off Haiti’s coast next week alongside the Comfort.
Roughead noted that the military was literally moving in an airport and other key infrastructure including a salvage ship, a scientific ship that can survey the ocean floor, and machinery to produce hundreds of thousands of gallons of water each day.
Citing his experiences following the 2004 tsunami, Roughead said he was concerned that lack of water could spur earthquake survivors to drink water contaminated by thousands of decomposing bodies, possibly spiking the death toll even higher.
