Russian strategic bombers increasingly “buzzed” US airspace last year, forcing American military aircraft to scramble in response, according to a report.

The number of flights by Russian bombers over the US Air Defense Identification Zone doubled last year from their norm, a move that congressional hawks see as a veiled message by Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine, The Washington Times reports, citing data from the North American Aerospace Defense Command, known as NORAD.

Russian jets made at least 10 intrusions into the transition area around US airspace in 2014, which is twice the average of five passes a year since 2006.

The US Air Force monitors the Air Defense Identification Zone and requests information from all aircraft intending to enter the area.

“We saw last year both an increase in their frequency as well an expansion of the areas where they flew. While these flights are ostensibly for training, they are also clearly intended to message to us,” Adm. William Gortney, the commander of NORAD, told The Times.

Rep. Michael K. Conaway, a Republican from Texas who sits on the House Armed Services Committee, said Russia’s actions were “very provocative” and could ultimately trigger unwanted confrontations.

“They’re very provocative, they’re subject to miscommunication, and some event could happen that no one wants,” he said.

Late last month, Russian military aircraft were scrambled to ward off a US destroyer in the Black Sea after it was found heading into Russia’s territorial waters.

The US Navy destroyer USS Ross was reportedly heading in the direction of Russian waters on May 30 after leaving the Romanian port of Costanta.

Ties between Washington and Moscow have reached an all-time low over the crisis in Ukraine, which began after pro-Western forces ousted the country’s president, Viktor Yanukovych, in February 2014.
