Two US police officers have been charged with assaults after they beat two black men in two different states, authorities said.

Officer Richard Garcia from Los Angeles Police Department was charged on Monday in connection with footage showing an incident in which a man said he was beaten and kicked while other officers were holding him down in South Los Angeles.

Garcia was charged with one count of assault under the color of authority in relation to the Oct. 16, 2014, arrest of Clinton Alford Jr., said Deputy Dist. Atty. Oscar Plascencia.

Several police officials, who saw the footage captured by a private security camera, said that the officer kicked the man’s head, and another source said the move was similar to “a football player kicking a field goal.”

Alford has lodged a federal civil-rights lawsuit against the officers involved, saying that he was not resisting when he was beaten.

Meanwhile, a former officer from Michigan has been charged with misconduct in office and assault which caused great bodily harm to black man Floyd Dent.

The decision was announced by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Monday. He said William Melendez was fired from the Inkster Police Department last week.

If convicted, Melendez would spend five years and ten years for the first and second felonies respectively.

“We cannot turn our heads when the law enforcer becomes the law breaker,” Worthy said at a press conference.

“Public confidence in the law enforcement is eroded ‎when police officers abuse citizens,” Worthy said Monday. “This devalues greatly the work that the majority of police officers in this country perform daily.”

In January, Dent, 57, was pulled over in Inkster, a suburb of Detroit, showed a video. Melendez started to beat Dent within seconds of approaching his car.

He hit him in the head more than a dozen times with other officers kicking him and using a Taser on him. He was hospitalized and had to be in hospital for several days because of severe injuries.

The two officers were charged amid massive protests across the United States against police brutality against African-Americans.
