Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin has said Moscow is likely to to sign a contract next month to export 24 Su-35S fighters to China, the Moscow-based Independent Military Review reported on Oct. 17.

Rogozin said a meeting will be held by military representatives from Russia and China next month to decide the price. Mikhail Pogosyan, the head of Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi, said his company is likely to make US$1.5 billion from the sale of 24 fighters.

President Vladimir Putin personally approved the sale back in November 2012 but the completion of the negotiations has taken two full years.

The People’s Liberation Army is one of Sukhoi’s main clients. The PLA Navy and Air Force have fighters like the Su-27 and Su-30 in their fleet and also design and produce the J-11B fighter based on Sukhoi designs.

The Su-35 is important to China as it is a 4+ generation fighter with technologies that can be used to develop a fifth-generation stealth fighter. After purchasing the Su-35, therefore, China will be a step further toward acquiring the technologies it still requires for its own J-20 stealth fighter.
