Images of an unidentified flying object have gone viral on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, after people in Shandong, Hebei and Inner Mongolia witnessed a bright object in the sky at roughly 9pm on July 9, reports Global Times, a daily newspaper published under the auspices of the Communist Party.

The official Weibo account of Rizhao People’s Broadcast in Shandong province first spread the news. Several people in Rizhao observed a huge funnel-shaped light in which a burning ball-like center was falling and shining but stopped in the middle of the sky after about ten seconds.

Soon after the broadcast, people in Hebei province and Inner Mongolia autonomous region reported an unidentified flying object with a fiery tail and trailing smoke moving upward in a vertical trajectory.

Recent Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) in the nearby area indicated launching activities in northwestern China at 8:45pm on July 9. The UFO may therefore have been a ballistic missile launched by the Second Artillery Corps, China’s strategic missile force, based in Qinghe, Beijing.

A NOTAM is a notice filed to alert aircraft pilots of potential hazards along a flight route or at a location that could affect the safety of the flight; NOATAMs are created and transmitted by aviation authorities, government agencies and airport operators.
