An American author and investigative journalist says Washington’s policy towards the Middle East has been changing like the region’s sands and has proved to be a “monumental failure.”

“The US policy is constantly shifting like the Middle East sands,” said Wayne Madsen in a phone interview with Press TV on Monday, as he indicated that the recent crisis in Iraq is a result of US activities in the region.

Over the recent days, the ISIL militants in Iraq, who are allied with loyalists of Iraq’s former Baathist regime, have been wreaking havoc in the country and committing atrocities against people.

The militants overran large swathes of land in northern Iraq, including the cities of Mosul, the country’s second-largest city, and Tikrit, the birthplace of former Baathist dictator Saddam Hussein, in just two weeks.

On Sunday, US Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) said that the US has been arming the ISIL militants in Syria. “I think we have to understand first how we got here. We have been arming ISIS in Syria.”

“None of this would have happened in Iraq of course had the United States not provided assistance to the rebels many of whom are al-Qaeda affiliates in Syria. We have been providing them with both non-lethal and lethal aid. Some of this weaponry has been used across the border in Iraq,” Madsen told Press TV.

“This is all the doing of the National Security Adviser, Susan Rice, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, … along with former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton,” he added.
