Families planning trips to one of Disney’s theme parks can now get waterproof rubber wristbands embedded with computer chips in lieu of paper tickets. When scanned, the bands can act as a park entry ticket, a FastPass, a hotel room key and a credit card. The “Magic Bands” — which are currently optional — are part of a new MyMagic+ “vacation management system” that can track guests as they move throughout the park.

Efficient? Perhaps. But post-Snowden, some worry that Magic Bands are nothing more than NSA-esque tracking devices.

Despite growing outrage over NSA spying and the increasing lack of privacy on Facebook and other social media sites, vacationers can’t wait to slap them on, according to comments on a well-read review of the bracelets.

The review posted to Disney fan site MouseChat suggests the only major problem with the bands, which can be adorned with charms depicting a multitude of popular Disney characters, is their functionality.

No mention of privacy issues is made anywhere in the write-up.

Disney has explained that the system is based on RFID – radio frequency identification – chips, the type of device that is in a SunPass.

True to its incredible moneymaking form, Disney has also announced plans to change the bands from time to time, creating a market for “collectible” ones. The company also conceived of “Magic Band accessories” called Cover Bands and “Magic Bandits” — little plastic characters that can be attached to the Magic Bands for personalization, like this little buttons you can stick in the holes in your Crocs.

The MagicBands review noted that it was nearly impossible to get those PIN codes to work.

A Disney spokesperson also told the Times that no personal information will be stored on the wristbands.

Park visitors commenting on the MouseChat review have had mixed results – but none have spoken of privacy issues.
