The Syrian government forces and the allied militia regained control over the entire north-eastern part of the city of Aleppo, a militia source told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

BEIRUT (Sputnik) — “The army and the militia managed to regain control over the districts of Sheikh Khodr and Sheikh Fares. Thus, we can say that the north-eastern part of Aleppo is completely under the control of the Syrian army,” the source said.

Thousands of civilians have been trapped in Aleppo for months, without access to food, water, electricity or medical assistance as Syrian government troops and rebel forces continue to fight for its control.

Earlier this month, the first special operation to evacuate the citizens of eastern Aleppo was held. On Monday, the Russian reconciliation center said that the Syrian army had established complete control over 12 districts of eastern Aleppo, liberating some 40 percent of the region’s territory.

In parallel, Damascus has to counter numerous extremist groups, in particular, the Islamic State (ISIL), the terrorist group outlawed in wide range of countries.
